A new club has been formed at BGHS that highlights the importance of incorporating women empowerment in our community. Lucy Allen and Layne Cook, BGHS Juniors, came up with the club to create more leadership positions for girls at our school.
Allen said that the Girl Up club is “supposed to focus on empowering girls at school and creating a community of girls who want to obtain leadership roles.” She also goes into detail on what the club will be doing at interest meetings, such as fundraising for women organizations or adding feminine products in our bathrooms here at school.
Mrs. Watson, a science teacher at BGHS, is the Girl Up club’s sponsor. She states that the club is actually a national organization and that Cook and Allen have friends participating in this club from all schools. Mrs. Watson believes that our school needs more of these kinds of clubs, especially incorporating female empowerment. Watson stated, “Layne and Lucy came to me with this idea that involves girls becoming powerful leaders and asked me if I wanted to be a sponsor. They told me to look it up to see if I would be interested and I realized this club is actually a national organization focused on the empowerment of girls and women to focus on making awareness of inequalities that still exist. I also think this club is beneficial because it also creates an environment where girls support girls. I was a women’s studies minor in college so I am very passionate about this subject.”
Mrs Watson’s passion for the highlight of female empowerment should create many opportunities for strong girls becoming women in our society. At the first club meeting Wednesday morning, Cook and Allen led the Girl Up club into learning about the importance of being involved in the club. Mrs. Watson also stated that the club is not only for just girls, and that it is an inclusive club welcomed to all who want to help women’s leadership.
