BGHS senior Byaombe Matendo was named 2025 Kentucky Soccer Player of the Year, as well as an All-American Player.
Matendo shines on the field and in the school building. He brings positive energy to BGHS and always leaves someone with a smile on their face. He shows what it truly means to be a Purple every single day. He also visits Parker Bennett Elementary during the week to offer guidance to young Purples.
This past Purples soccer season was very successful for our school. Bowling Green was named District and Region Champions, as well as qualifying to the Elite 8 in the Kentucky State Tournament. BGHS Purple’s Soccer team was led by their captain Matendo, through all victories this historic season. He led the team through his leadership and heart, which he said are his biggest strengths in the game.
Matendo’s success doesn’t only come from himself, he says.
“Coach Widener has made the biggest impact on my career and I am very grateful for the opportunities he has given me,” Matendo said.
Byaombe also claims that “his people” have made an impact on his career as well, and that community means the world to him. Matendo started his high school career at the Taranga Academy and continues to make a positive impact on the Purples community.
