Micheal Eugene Archer, otherwise known by his stage name D’Angelo, was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1974. He was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He was accosted commonly by the Neo-soul movement in the 1990’s. He first gained traction when he co-produced the R&B Black Men United’s single “U Will Know.” Another big accomplishment of his was winning Best R&B Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
In light of his recent death on Oct. 14 2025, I wanted to listen to a 2000’s No.1 billboard album. He collaborated with people like Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and J Dilla. They helped him compose the sounds, lyrics, and production for the album. D’Angelo uses funky jazz sounds, low bass, his talented voice, and his creative lyricism allow him to be one of the best Neo-Soul artist of all time with other greats like Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige. Songs like “The Line” and “Devil’s Pie” empathize with his beautiful understanding of neo-soul, which made him so popular at a rapid rate.
