Boygenius member Lucy Dacus released her fourth album titled Forever is a Feeling on March 28, 2025. The album leads listeners through a series of feelings like the love she has for her girlfriend (Julien Baker, also a member of Boygenius), her navigating the world with the people she once loved and loves most, and illustrating how every feeling no matter what it correlates to, can be as heavy as love.
The opening song is labeled “Calliope Prelude.” It is a serene melody that gives you a feel for how the rest of the album will sound.
The next track, “Big Deal” is about a friend confessing their feelings for Lucy even though they both knew that a relationship wouldn’t work out. “You’ve got your girl, you’re gonna marry her. I’ll be watching in a pinstriped suit, sincerely happy for the both of you” refers to the fact that she’s happy that her friend is now getting married.
Track three, “Ankles” refers to Lucy wanting to further her and Julien’s intimate relationship. She wants more than what they did before. “Pull me by the ankles to the edge of the bed / And take me like you do in your dreams / I’m not gonna stop you / I’m not gonna stop you this time, baby / I want you to show me what you mean / Then help me with the crossword in the mornings / You are gonna make me tea / Gonna ask me how did I sleep.” Lucy doesn’t just want a one night stand, she wants commitment between Julien and her; she wants to feel forever with them.
Track four, “Limerence” Lucy sings “Why do I feel alive when I’m behaving my worst?” This references that she knows limerence, the state of being infatuated with someone, isn’t healthy but she doesn’t want to stop loving that person. She just has to figure out how to do it in a healthy manner.
Track five, “Modigliani” is named after an Italian painter who Lucy references in the song. The reason she makes this connection is because the faces in his paintings were long. “Modigliani melancholy got me long in the face” refers to missing someone she loves but can’t always be around.
Track six, “Talk,” Lucy sings about leaving a past relationship, and her ex refusing to talk to her at all. “Why can’t we talk anymore? / We used to talk for hours / Do I make you nervous or bored? / Or did I drink you to the last drop?” Lucy doesn’t know if she was the cause of the end of their relationship, but she constantly wonders where things went wrong.
Track seven, “For Keeps” is about Lucy and her partner losing their religious beliefs and no longer believing in the afterlife. In this song “I still miss you when I’m with you / ‘cause I know we’re not playing for keeps.” references losing her partner in death. They won’t be together until the end of time, but she loves Julien and has them right now.
Track eight, “Forever is a Feeling” is about wanting to feel and do everything with her partner forever. “This is bliss / This is hell / Forever is a feeling and I know it well.” represents that she wants to have Julien with her all the time even through the good and bad. Lucy and Julien love each other so much that they’ll persevere through anything that happens and love each other just as much as they did the day before.
Track nine, “Come Out” tells listeners about wanting to be with another woman who isn’t ready to come out about her sexuality to her family. “So come out, come out / wherever you are / I miss you, I miss you, I miss you in my arms / Come out, come out, there’s no need to hide / I want you, I want you, I want you by my side” Lucy understands that coming out can be rough, but she doesn’t want to wait for that to happen; she wants to be openly out with the person she’s singing about.
Track ten “Best Guess” is about being best friends with someone and their relationship later becoming more than that. Lucy sings “You may not be an angel but you are my girl / You are my pack a day, you are my favorite place / You were my best friend before you were / My best guess at the future.” She loves Julien so much that she’s addicted to her like a smoker’s addiction to cigarettes.
Track eleven, “Bullseye” is about parting ways with an ex and hoping the best for them. “But I wanted to be there the day you figured it all out / Whoever is, I hope they’re proud.” Even though they’ve split, she still wants them to prosper and do good things.
We can assume that track twelve, “Most Wanted Man” is about Lucy’s love for Julien. Lucy was surprised that Julien actually wanted to be her girlfriend. Now that they’re dating, it’s hard to split the two apart. “I’m not going anywhere / Least not anywhere you’re not / Got me wrapped around your finger / Tied in a double knot.” Lucy would do anything for Julien and is happily wrapped around their finger.
The last song on the album, titled “Lost Time” is about making up for time that Lucy didn’t have with her girlfriend. “I love you and every day / That I knew and didn’t say / Is lost time” tells listeners that Lucy wishes she’d confessed to Julien about her feelings sooner. She wanted to be more than friends long before it happened. She wants to remake memories with Julien in places where she wasn’t with Lucy before.
Forever is a Feeling is definitely worth the listen if you’re into indie-rock/folk music.
