‘Locket’ is an emotional rollercoaster that encapsulates the pain that can come from someone you love not feeling the same anymore. The album begins with ‘Locket theme’ which begins with a very fairytale-like sound and melancholy sort of lyrics to it. The song is about self-reflection, navigating life and figuring out who you are after you lose a complicated relationship. Madison sings of being away from someone she loves deeply, but can’t be with. So she puts the feeling she experiences in a place it can stay, a locket. Track 2, ‘Yes baby’ is about embracing self confidence and adding a bit of a house music vibe, this song hits on self worth, and desire, Also, after a breakup trying to feel empowered again, even if it means it’s by yourself. The song really is upbeat and a bit of an escapism type song. ‘Angel wings’ is a playful kiss off song, which is influenced by a 90’s beat, and touches on Madison imagining that her ex is gone or “dead to her” to help cope with the fact that the breakup was entirely her exes choice. Track four, ‘for the night’, is a song for people who wish to escape emotional pain, but still seek intense and unhealthy connection with someone they love. This song is for those who feel vulnerable with how they feel and are struggling to hold on to the intimate parts of the relationship.
‘Bad enough’ explores being with someone people that is no good for you, but not caring enough about it to leave or try to change them. It has a deep emotional message of knowing a relationship is toxic and harming you but struggling to find a way to be free of it. ‘Healthy habit’ is an emotional relapse where she keeps going back to the person who is toxic and wrong for her all while struggling with attachment and self respect. The title ‘healthy habit’ is ironic because in the song, she sings about everything in her relationship that would be considered unhealthy. Track 7 is said to be the most emotional song on the album, with Madison herself having the producers put heavy auto tune on the track so you couldn’t hear her voice waver, as she cried while recording it. In the song Madison sings the line,“I only exist in the moment you’re talking to me…If we can’t be together then I’ll just go back to sleep…how am I nothing to you while you’re still everything to me.”
This song is about feeling like a person is the only light in the world and they are the only one who can show you the light,

but if you can’t have them then there is no reason to do anything. This song allows fans to relate their own experiences, and to find comfort in the words, and to try to reframe their feelings into something better. ‘Bittersweet’ is a mix of being sad about the lack of love “wake up sad” and to feel happier about the self-realization “go to bed so glad”. These lyrics give an insight into accepting both parts of a breakup, both the good and bad halves. ‘Complexity’ is just as it sounds. Trying to love someone who doesn’t love themselves enough to change, or better themselves. Also, knowing you couldn’t expect them to ever love you and letting go of that hope. This song puts a spotlight on one sided feelings, just like in ‘you’re still everything’. Arguably the most catchy and carefree song on the album, ‘Make you mine’ feels like pushing boundaries and feeling intense attraction when you set your eyes on someone and being determined to have them. Lastly, ‘Nothing at all’ is about closure, and ending a chapter, while not being wholly okay, but on your way to healing , and finding personal freedom, from a bad relationship. Overall the album is a love letter to holding memories close, and reflecting on the beauty of letting go, and finding yourself again. But holding the keepsake memories in a locket.
Thoughts
My personal rating for this album would be out a 10, a 8.5. Madison has bits in some of these songs with some of the most beautiful vocals, and I love the way she overlaps her high notes to create a beautiful “choir like” sound. My favorite song on this album would have to be between ‘you’re still everything’ and’ bad enough’. These songs both make me actually feel emotions and I can feel the pain within the song, which very few songs manage to ever do. With you’re still everything, the lyrics are some of the most beautiful and sad I’ve listened to. ‘Locket theme’ to me is an angelic emotional rush, and I love the way it blends right into the next song, ‘yes baby’. The beat for yes baby is so fun and such a good dance song. I mean, you can’t help but dance to it. ‘Angel wings’ is definitely my third favorite song on this album. I love singing it, and it’s always stuck in my head. I love how most songs on this album are easy to memorize too! But with ‘angel wings’ it is so relatable, and the ending… don’t even get me started. The techno type beat at the end is such a nice edition to a song that is one of the more soft beats from the album. The way it gives a bit of a sneak peek into the next song is so good, my mouth literally dropped when I heard it the first time. This is definitely one of the songs I think about during class, and find myself singing the lyrics in my head. Going out of order a bit, ‘Complexity’ and ‘Nothing at all’ are the two songs I don’t really love, and often find myself skipping over. It isn’t that they are bad, but they are slower in beat, and while the lyrics are really beautiful and meaningful, I just don’t love them. But I have a feeling that at some point I’ll come back to them and appreciate them at another time in my life. ‘Bittersweet’ and ‘make you mine’ are the popular singles of this album for a reason, these are the two songs that made me presave the album before it came out, and inspired me to become a Madison Beer fan in the first place. Especially ‘bittersweet’, it was so easy to learn the lyrics to and just sing along with. It has such good meaning behind it and it is so relatable. This whole album really encapsulates what being in a tough relationship really looks like, . And all the emotions that come along with it. Lastly, I really want to talk about ‘you’re still everything’. I’m still deciding but this song really might be my favorite song this year, and most definitely my #1 from Locket. Like I said earlier, this is one of the only songs that have ever made me feel exactly what is being said in the song. The pain and longing that comes while listening to this song can turn the best day instantly to a very gray and melancholy one. While it is very sad, it is also so beautiful, especially the way it was written. Definitely don’t recommend listening if you’re having a good day!
