Bowling Green High School is ecstatic to finally introduce our very own dance team. The Dance Team has started their career by joining the band for their football halftime shows, along with performing at basketball games. They plan to attend regional and state competitions after Christmas Break, forging a path toward more accomplishments in the future.
Eventually, the dance team hopes to work with the WKU dance team to help passionate dancers prepare for college and possible Broadway auditions. The BGHS Dance Team is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to move their body in an exciting way and forge their career as a dancer.
Amelia Cook is the journalism teacher at Bowling Green Junior High and is serving as the assistant coach of the team. She started as an assistant coach for the BGJHS Dance Team, which originally started 4 years ago, but has years of dance experience under her belt. Cook has trained for almost 10 years at SOKY Dance Arts in 3 different types of dance, so she has had all the experience necessary to thrive in her role. Coach Cook has shared her hope for this upcoming season.
“I’m most excited for our team to compete in a new category. We’ve always competed in just pom. This year at the high school level, we have so many talented dancers,” Cook said. She also shared her admiration for her dancers.
“Several of our dancers also take upwards of 10 hours a week of studio classes if that tells you anything about their dedication to the sport. Yes, I said it. Dance is a sport!”
Many members of our BGHS Marching Band have expressed their excitement about getting to work alongside the Dance Team. They have started combined rehearsals, where the Marching Band will play while the Dance Team rehearses their dance. These rehearsals give both the Marching Band and Dance Team a chance to socialize and get to know each other better.
One BGHS floutist, Sorcha Pattee, says she is “amazed at the dedication of some of (the) dancers.” She thinks that the dance team “really ties (the halftime show) together.”
